National HIV Testing Day is June 27, 2012

National HIV Testing Day is an annual campaign coordinated by the National Association of People with AIDS to raise awareness of the need for HIV testing to know your own personal status. This year the National HIV Testing Day is June 27, 2012 and the theme is “Take the Test” “Take Control”.

In the United States, 1.2 million people are living with HIV and it is estimated that one in five don’t know they are infected.  Since 2007, 1,410 cases of AIDS/HIV have been reported inWisconsin.

If you have HIV, early detection will allow you to get medical care and treatment that can help you to live a longer and healthier life.  Early detection and medication also decreases the chances of passing the virus on to others.

HIV testing is available from your medical provider as well as other independent sites. Confidential, low or no cost HIV testing and discussion of your personal risk factors is available at the Oneida County Public Health Department.  You can also search testing sites at www.hivtest.org
